A person’s health status may affect more than the individual: it can affect family members, caregivers, employers and others. We know that some individuals need specialized care including children born with disabilities or developmental delays and the frail elderly. Like health needs, the need for safety takes many forms. We need to feel safe and secure in our homes and in our community. Sadly, however, some children are not safe in their homes and are victims of abuse and neglect. Community professionals must intervene and speak for the best interest of the child when he or she is before the court because of the parents’ actions.

Sixty-one elderly persons benefited from the day health services provided by The Guest House in 2005. Services included skilled nursing services, medication management, personal care, nutritious meals and opportunities for activities and socialization. The availability of such services prevents premature nursing home placement and allows family members who are caregivers to keep their jobs.

United Way donors are investing in nursing and health services that impact over 150 children annually. In 2005, the nursing team provided over 2000 clinical treatments or responses, empowering children with disabilities to fully participate and all children to benefit from a safe and healthy early childhood environment.
